We are looking for a volunteer treasurer to join our board of trustees

Could you help us make a lasting difference for people affected by hostage situations?

Hostage International is looking for an experienced, fully qualified accountant to join our board of trustees as volunteer treasurer.

This is a unique opportunity to use your professional expertise to support our charity in helping people affected by hostage situations, including former hostages and their families, navigate the devastating impact of captivity and its aftermath.

Our work is shaped by lived experience.

Hostage International was co-founded by Sir Terry Waite KCMG CBE, who himself spent almost four years as a hostage in Lebanon. Our patrons, Judith Tebbutt and John McCarthy CBE, are also former hostages. Their experiences, alongside those of the many people we support are at the heart of our commitment ensuring that no one has to face the consequences of a hostage situation alone.

The opportunity

We are seeking a fully qualified UK accountant, ideally with experience of working internationally and/or within the charity sector, who can volunteer approximately one day per month to help the board and CEO oversee Hostage International’s financial health, governance and controls.

As treasurer, you will help to ensure that the board of trustees fulfils its financial governance duties and responsibilities, while helping to safeguard the charity’s ability to deliver its vital work.

The charity has four employees leading this work.

You will work closely with the CEO, Chair and fellow trustees in providing constructive advice, financial oversight and assurance.

As an active member of the board of trustees, we would also expect the treasurer to represent the charity at events and to support our fundraising initiatives.

Why join us?

As treasurer, you will be part of a committed board helping to ensure that Hostage International remains financially strong, well governed and able to fulfil its charitable objectives.

This is an opportunity to put your accounting expertise to work in support of people whose lives have been profoundly affected by hostage situations — and to contribute to an organisation whose leadership and patronage includes people with lived experience.

Please note that this is a voluntary, unpaid position that would see you being part of a professional and friendly team. If you are an accountant who would like to use your skills to support a small charity with a significant purpose, we would love to hear from you.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board of Trustees that reflects the communities we serve, and welcome applications from all backgrounds.
