Former hostage Anoosheh ran the London Marathon with his friend Simon in 2025 and together raised over £15,000 – a record for Hostage International!

The duo made their promise to run together while Anoosheh was still incarcerated in Evin. Simon was the British ambassador to Iran during Anoosheh’s final few months in prison and was involved in negotiating his release; the two have become lifelong friends as a result of this connection.

Georgia, who cheered on Simon & Anoosheh in London, went on to run the Great Run half marathon in Bristol in 2025. She helped raise over £2,000 for Hostage International. She said:

“I want to show my support for all those innocent people caught up in geopolitical events, through no fault of their own, by running to raise funds and awareness for Hostage International. I like the fact that it is a non-political charity that seems to work below the radar, quietly getting on with providing support to anyone who needs it.”

Challenge Events

Take on physical challenges while raising funds for our work.

Challenge options include overseas treks and cycling events. Popular choices:

  1. Overseas treks with Global Adventure Challenges
  2. Cycling or triathlon events across Europe, Canada and Australia

Every step you take helps us provide support to families and former hostages.

Sam, whose uncle was killed in a terrorist hostage siege, completed an ultramarathon for Hostage International.

Speaking about his fundraising experience, he said:

“Asking people to donate to a cause close to your heart can feel daunting. The sheer variety of fundraising websites can be overwhelming, and revisiting difficult memories from the past can make the process even harder. Thankfully, Hostage International made this process seamless. Their guidance through every practical stage — setting up the donation website, writing the story, and offering advertising advice — was invaluable. Beyond practical expertise, the pastoral support provided was exceptional. Altogether, they made the entire experience manageable while also being profoundly reassuring, and I can’t thank them enough.”

How Your Fundraising Helps

When someone is taken hostage, families face situations they never expected. They often don’t know where to turn.

Your fundraising means we can:

  1. Provide direct support and guidance from our specialists
  2. Offer practical help with financial, legal, and media challenges
  3. Connect families with mental health support
  4. Support former hostages rebuilding their lives
  5. Deliver training on family support and hostage reintegration

“We [ran the Marathon] to give back to those who supported us when all prospect of hope seemed bleak. Hostage International was the only organisation that connected to our situation on a deeply personal level, which is embedded at the charity’s core DNA through Terry Waite. The charity gave us every resource it had available, regardless of the nature of help we required.”
